Ben Cohen and Jason Salzman: 50 Ways You Can Show George the Door in 2004
Amusing, informative, and, hey, the title got me to read it. The cover's sort of funny too.
Richard A. Clarke: Against All Enemies: Inside America's War on Terror
An insider's look at the practices of the Bush administration, as well as previous administrations. Very informative. Very thought-provoking. A must read for anyone even mildly interested in politics.
Laurie Lynn Drummond: Anything You Say Can and Will Be Used Against You : Stories
A collection of stories about 5 female police officers.
Plum Sykes: Bergdorf Blondes
A total fluff piece, this fiction book is funny, but when you realize its based on an actual lifestyle of some people, it kind of makes you sick that there are people who live like this. Still, funny stuff ifyou don't take it seriously.
Nicholas Rinaldi: Between Two Rivers
This is perhaps the BEST book I have ever read, and I have read A LOT of books. Takes place in New York City from 1981-2001. Follows the ins and outs and histories and inner thinkings of the concierge and residents of Echo Terrace, near the World Trade Center. Blends real history with fiction masterfully. The final chapters are the most disturning, gut-wrenching, thought-provoking words you could read. I cried and then proceeded to talk to Charles for hours about these characters, real history, and the tragedies in this story. I couldn't even post to my weblog the night I finished this because my emotions were too raw. The writer is an absolute genius with his choice of words and descriptions.
Robert Bryce: Cronies: Oil, the Bushes, and the Rise of Texas, America's Superstate
Generation Kill
This book was written by a Rolling Stone columnist. He spent months with a unit during fierce fights in Iraq. He presents the stories from the front lines, comments from the soldiers, and what the experience was really like. There were SO MANY times I was angry reading these accounts. I sometimes felt sorry for these soldiers, I sometimes hated them. Then I remembered how young most were and what I was like then. If I had to do what they're doing at that age, what would I be like? A definite MUST READ for everyone.
Glenn A. Levant: Keeping Kids Drug Free: D.A.R.E. Official Parent's Guide
Since our county eliminated the D.A.R.E. program from our schools to pay for things like new reading and math programs and preparation for the multitude of tests now given since the No Child Left Behind Act, drug education has not been as prevalent. (Though won't a child be left behind if he/she isn't educated about drugs and ways to resist using them?) I wanted to learn about the program and maybe use some techniques at home.
Nicholas Sparks: Nights in Rodanthe
A mom tells her grown daughter the story of the great love of her life. Very touching story. Do kids ever really know their parents the way they think they do? I hope I can share my "life story" and "who I am" with my kids when they are grown, the parts I can't show them while they're young.
William Blum: Rogue State: A Guide To The World's Only Superpower
Nicholas Sparks: The Wedding
A very touching book about a husband trying to re-capture his wife's love after many years of marriage.
William Kotzwinkle: Walter The Farting Dog: Trouble At The Yard Sale
Walter is one of the cutest children's book characters I've come across, and I read to my kids all the time. Both Walter books are the best!!
